Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, The Doors emerged from a chance meeting between singer Jim Morrison and keyboardist Ray Manzarek, who soon began shaping the band’s distinctive sound together. Joined by guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, the quartet fused rock, blues, jazz and poetry into something strikingly original. The Doors quickly became one of the most recognisable acts of the late 1960s, recording and performing together until they disbanded in 1973, following the untimely passing of Jim Morrison two years prior.Although their active years as a band ended in 1973, the influence and appeal of The Doors have endured for decades. The Recording Industry Association of America reports that the group has sold 33 million certified records in the United States alone, with worldwide sales exceeding 100 million. These figures place them among the most successful recording artists in rock history. The band also achieved a notable commercial milestone as the first American act to earn eight consecutive Gold and Platinum albums.
