Description

Talking Heads emerged from the vibrant New York art-punk scene of the mid-1970s, when Rhode Island School of Design alumni David Byrne (guitar/vocals), Chris Frantz (drums), and Tina Weymouth (bass) relocated to the city. Soon joined by Jerry Harrison, formerly of The Modern Lovers, the quartet forged a sound that blended punk urgency with funk, art-rock experimentation and Byrne’s singular lyrical vision. Together they pioneered a postmodern fusion of punk, world music and funk, carving out a catalogue that remains one of the most influential of the era.By 1980, the band had reached new creative heights with Remain in Light, their landmark collaboration with producer Brian Eno. Inspired by Fela Kuti and driven by polyrhythms, layered grooves, and hypnotic vocal interplay, the album pushed beyond rock into the realm of afrobeat and electronic minimalism. Lauded upon release and still considered one of the most groundbreaking albums of its time, Remain in Light cemented Talking Heads as pioneers who expanded the boundaries of popular music. To bring this complex and textured music to life on stage, Talking Heads expanded their lineup for the supporting ‘Remain In Light Tour’. Joining the core quartet were Adrian Belew (King Crimson) on guitar, Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic) on keyboards, percussionist Steve Scales, vocalist Dolette McDonald and Busta “Cherry” Jones on bass. This extended ensemble transformed the live show into a tour de force of the seemingly disparate genres the album combined, revitalising their sound into an electronic and polyrhythmic celebration.
