Mike Oldfield’s groundbreaking career began in 1973 with the release of Tubular Bells, an album that revolutionised progressive rock and catapulted him to international fame. Known for his pioneering use of multi-tracking and blending various genres, Oldfield’s work has always been an exploration of new sounds and styles. He followed his iconic debut with Hergest Ridge (1974), Ommadawn (1975), and Incantations (1978), all of which received critical acclaim and solidified his reputation as a constantly evolving artist with a loyal following.By 1984, Oldfield had ventured into new musical territories with the releases of Five Miles Out (1982) and Crises (1983), blending his signature instrumental compositions with more accessible, pop-oriented tracks. His 1984 album Discovery continued this shift, incorporating rock and electronic elements with a focus on catchy melodies and synthesiser-driven arrangements. The album featured the hit single “To France”, a track that became a fan favourite and highlighted Oldfield’s growing ability to cross musical boundaries.Oldfield supported the album with the 1984 Discovery Tour, a dynamic live showcase of Oldfield’s evolving sound set against a particularly busy period of recording new material. Spanning Europe, the tour featured both fan favourites and new tracks from Discovery, offering a perfect balance between his progressive roots and a more mainstream appeal.
