£12.99
Selling England by the Pound, released in September 1973, marked a breakthrough moment for Genesis both commercially and critically. Widely regarded as one of the band’s finest achievements, the album resonated deeply with fans and critics alike. Songs like “Firth of Fifth,” “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe),” and “The Cinema Show” displayed the bandâs ability to blend technical musicianship with memorable melodies and whimsical storytelling. The album reached #3 on the UK charts and broke into the US charts too, signalling the band’s increasing international appeal. An international tour supporting the album began on 19 September 1973 in Paris, France, and consisted of 112 shows over three legs across Europe and North America, before concluding on 20 January 1974 in London. The band’s live show was a spectacle, with visuals that complemented the surreal storytelling of the album. Peter Gabriel devised new stories before songs and wore costumes for performances of “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight” and “The Battle of Epping Forest”, adding an extra dimension to the already intricate performances of prior tours.
