With “Three Sisters”, Goblyns deliver a psychedelic powerhouse that blurs the boundaries between funk, soul, krautrock and global groove traditions – a pulsating trip through soundscapes that seem familiar and yet surprise again and again. Following their acclaimed debut “Hunki Bobo” (2024) and the genre shifting EP “This Is Spaghettification”, the trio from South Africa have taken the next logical step towards musical independence and sophistication with their second album. On “Three Sisters”, brothers Liam and Francis Broek and their long-time companion Giovanni Votano create a world of sound that defies simple categorization. If you are looking for parallels, you might find them with Kikagaku Moyo, CAN or Khruangbin – but Goblyns ultimately remain unique. Their music is infused with krautrock repetition, velvety psychedelic jam, fat bass groove, playful layers of guitar and an underlying funk attitude that would make even The Meters nod respectfully. At a time when many bands lose themselves in genre-political arbitrariness, Goblyns take the opposite approach: they combine everything – but in their own, absolutely coherent way.
