Formed in Woking in the early 1970s, The Jam brought together Paul Weller on vocals and guitar, Bruce Foxton on bass, and Rick Buckler on drums. Drawing on mod culture and punk energy, they quickly established a distinctive sound that set them apart from their peers. Their sharp image and even sharper social commentary earned them critical acclaim and a devoted following, leading to multiple hit singles and albums that defined an era of British music.Following a string of hit albums such as In the City (1977) and All Mod Cons (1978), The Jam evolved into one of the most vital bands of the late 1970s. By the time they reached Setting Sons in 1979, they had moved beyond punk’s initial burst into something richer and more expansive, blending melody with narrative depth. Success came not just in chart positions, but in their growing reputation as a formidable live act, capable of translating their compelling studio output into electrifying performances.Setting Sons marked a turning point, originally conceived as a loose concept album and ultimately released to strong critical and commercial reception. Its themes of friendship, loss and changing times resonated widely, while tracks such as “The Eton Rifles” cemented their place at the forefront of British music. Almost immediately after its release, the band began work on what would become Sound Affects (1980), pushing their sound further into textured, inventive territory, all while maintaining a relentless touring schedule in support of Setting Sons.
