The Guadalajara, Mexico-based Aztec folk metal group CEMICAN – whose unique music incorporates elements of the legends, folklore, mysticism, mythologies and ideologies of ancient Mexican culture – has returned with their third album, “In Ohtli Teoyohtica In Miquiztli,” the follow-up to their independently-released 2009 debut “Ometiliztli” and 2012’s “Ticateh Ipan Miquixtlahuac.” CEMICAN means “the duality of life and death” in the Aztecan language of Nahuatl, which is spoken by nearly 2 million people in Central Mexico. The band, which combines the modern instrumentation of a rock band with traditional pre-Hispanic instruments, experienced a breakout year in 2018 after a decade of hard work as an independent artist. In addition to their single/video “Guerreros de Cemican” receiving regular airplay on satellite radio, the six-piece group was invited to perform at the Paris edition of the Download Festival and Germany’s Wacken Open Air, as well as Force Fest – described by Revolver as “Mexico’s premier open-air festival” – in their native country. The band continued to build momentum during the first half of 2019, when they returned to Europe in both the winter – when they performed at France’s Cernunnos Pagan Fest and Germany’s Wacken Winter Nights – as well as the summer, when they made their debut at the noted French festival Hellfest.
